You asked! Expert A to your skin care Q's: Men Shaving Products Does your shaving leave you with cubes, blows and rough skin? Our experts give their best options to smooth the process. In every edition of WebMD the Magazine, our experts answer your questions about care, beauty, makeup, care and more. In our July-August 2010 issue, Dan Quirk, 40, manager of a marketing research company in Minneapolis, asked for product advice. For recommendations, we go to David Colbert, MD, (founder and chief physician, New York Dermatology Group, New York City) and Richard G. Fried, MD, PhD, (a dermatologist in Yardley, Pa., and author of Healing Adult Acne: his guide to clear skin and self-confidence).Q: After shaving, I often break and my skin seems tougher. What can I use? Do I really need a product designed for men's skin? The best selections of Dr. ColbertDr. ColbertThe best selectionsA: The short answer is that, yes, men are from Mars and women are from Venus when it comes to their skin. Men tend to have larger pores, more facial hair and larger sebaceous glands that produce more oil. A: Men's skin needs special handling when it comes to shaving. Doing it every day rubs the dead skin but also exposes the fresh and vulnerable skin that is prone to irritation. I suggest men wash before shaving with a soft cleaner like Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser ($11.49). This helps prevent irritation while also smoothing the beard spider, reducing the risk of shaving. I also like La Roche-Posay Toleraine Purifying Foaming Cream ($22). Cétaphilic Skin Cleaner La Roche-Posay Toleraine Purifying Foaming CreamContinued The shaver cream is crucial in how your skin tolerates the blade of a shaver. I like Kiehl #31-0 (18 dollars). It is very hydrating with a minimal smell. Kiehl is the shaving formula of shaving near you #31-0 There is not a difficult and fast rule on the moisturizers, but men prone to rupture would be wise to avoid heavier creams. I often suggest Lubriderm Daily Moisture Lotion ($8.49); it does not have a strong smell, and the light lotion absorbs without a greasy feeling. Lubriderm Daily Moisture Lotion Dr. Fried's the best of Dr's beaks. FriedA: Men as a rule tend to have a thicker skin and more fat, but that doesn't mean you should be tough on your face. A gentle moisturizing and non-irritating cleaner can prepare and a little dampen the skin of irritation and numerous microscopic cuts and abrasions that occur during shaving. Dove Men+Care Body and Face Wash ($4.99) combines moisturizing and relaxing ingredients with mentol, offering a cooling sensation that men seem to like. A:Dove Men+ Body Care and Facial WashingContinuous The cleaner is also key to controlling the oil and avoiding interruptions. A great option is Neutrogena Deep Clean Sport On-the-Go Cleansing Wipes ($6.99). They're portable, so kids can take them to the gym to clean sweat and excess oil after a training. Neutrogen Depth of sports cleaning on the way For guys who use a shaver blade, I suggest a shaver gel that is softer, like Nivea for Men Sensitive Shaving Gel (3.29). It contains soothing ingredients, including vitamin E, manzanilla and soy oil, that help the knife slide over the skin, reducing the likelihood of irritation. Nivea for Men Sensitive Shaving GelMen needs to take an extra step after shaving to treat your skin. A multitasking product that quickly absorbs, such as L'OréalMen's Expert Comfort Max Anti-Irritation After Shave Balm with SPF 15 ($7.99), helps repair the skin with shea butter and (a form of silicone that helps smooth and protect the skin), while providing non-grease. Making men use sunscreen can be the biggest obstacle to the care of men's skin. L'OréalMen's Expert Comfort Max Anti-Irritation After Shave Balm with SPF 15 One more point: Men are naturally more acne-prone, and the abrasive nature of shaving when acne is present can be problematic. In addition, trapped facial hair often causes new outbreaks or makes old ones worse. Fried tells her male patients to try an electric razor instead of a straight blade and, after shaving, apply a 1% or lower cream to treat the razor irritation.
