How to take care of a rash or knee torn at home Please get professional help if a serious injury occurs (broken bone, visible bone, nerve, tendon, fat, infection...). If you have a wound that you think can be cared at home, first, shave the hair of the surrounding skin so that the bandage can glue to the smooth skin. Many times I'm in my kids' soccer games, and they or their teammates have a skinny knee and I don't clean it at all, I just put the dress on the wound because it's not practical to clean the wounds in a football game. But if the wound is deep, it would be better to clean it with sterile water with some salt also known as "normal seal." If you live in a country where tap water is not drinkable, it is important to use normal saline. Normal Saline Recipe Water: 1 liter (or 1 room or 4 cups) Salt: 1 1/2 teaspoons (or 9 grams) Heat this mixture until it boils for a full minute. Turn off the heat and Let him calm down! If you don't see any dirt, you can rinse it by spilling the clean pot while the water cools. How do I dry my wound? Let the wound dry the air unless it has clean sterile gauze to use it to pat it dry. Do not use those cotton makeup removers as they will leave cotton smoke in the wound that will make healing harder. Should I put iodine in my wound or mercurochrome or hibiclens? No. First, that hurts. Second, you can kill the cells that the body sends to the wound to fight the infection. The most important part of cleaning a wound and preventing it from getting infected is to tear all the dirt out, leaving nothing there. This may take a long time to do it right, and it may hurt, but it hurts much less if you do it first rather than wait until it gets infected. Do it now. If it hurts too much, look for a health care provider. They can numb you so you can clean it properly. What do I cover my wound now that it's clean and dry? Depends. If it is quite large and quite bloody, use non-adhesive pads, sometimes called Telfa pads. If it is not too deep and not bleeding, it is easier to use Tegaderm's transparent deposits. (We have no funding to say this!) I always carry about 30 of them in my purse in case of finding someone in need, and I do, once a week. The most affordable I can find are We don't have money to mention that either, we just want to share where we find them more affordable. In the pharmacy they can often cost 10 times more than in 100 online packages. For most scraps, you can use the (2-3/8" X 2-3/4"), but some will need more than one, or you can get the (4" x 4 3/4"). How can I apply non-stick pads or Telfa?1) Wash your hands.2) Put an antibiotic ointment in the center of the non-adherent pad, although a thin layer of ointment is spread across the surface of the wound. Lightly dab the small ointment block around the wound to make sure it spreads. Then put that dress on top of the wound. Try to get dressings big enough for a pad to cover the entire wound. Put ribbon across the four edges of the wound and paste it to the shaved skin. Or if it's a big wound, try the elastic networks to keep the dressing in place without a tape. If you're using tape, I like the clear tape better for this, or paper tape. The adhesive tape is a little too sticky and hard on the skin. If that's all you have, okay, but if it's gonna take a while to heal, you might consider investing in paper or paper tape. Change the dressing every day or perhaps before if it gets soaked with blood. If you start to wear red, swollen, more painful or draining pus, please see a health care professional on the wound. Try to leave the ointment and non-adhesive pads until it is cured, or until it is better enough to apply Tegaderm, please see below. The healing of the wet wound is much faster and more comfortable than letting it form a crust. Please keep it wet. Tegaderm: How do I apply it?1) Wash your hands.2) Remove the paper on the back of the dressing.3) Apply the dressing to the wound so you can see the wound through the window.4) Remove the frame from the window from the top that surrounds the film. How can I get the Tegaderm to stay great? Tegaderm dressings can be a bit expensive, so not to use too many, try to keep them stuck to the skin for as long as possible. This means applying something to help you stay better. You can use Skin Tac wipes, benzoin tincture or Skin-Prep. Apply one of these to the surrounding healthy skin, NOT to the wound. I like Skin Tac the best, but if you would like to benzoin, I like Sunmark because it's clear, it doesn't smell too strong and doesn't discolour the skin, unlike other brands. (We don't have any funding to promote these brands, this is just what I prefer.) The purpose of sticky products is to make the dressings stick to the skin better so that the dressings stay for days instead of hours. With Skin Tac or Skin Prep, just open the package and clean it in the healthy skin where the dressing is supposed to stick. With benzoin, use a cotton swab or a piece of gauze, mop it with benzoin and rub it on the healthy and undamaged skin surrounding the wound. Let the sticky solution dry for a minute, until the skin is sticky. (Don't put your fingers in the wound, just touch the healthy skin to test if it's dry.) This system is much better than gauze or gangids, which stick to the wound and rejuvenate the wound when the bandage is changed. Tegaderm is the most comfortable dressing (perfect for children who do not like to remove Bandaids) and provides wet healing that makes healing fast and reduces healing. How long have I left the Tegaderm? Try to leave the Tegaderm on until it falls. This could be hours or it could be a week. Sometimes the wound gets a little irritating and this is the body getting rid of small pieces of dirt and trash (expectedly you have already washed the larger pieces). So when the dressing builds a little liquid, just remove the outer edges from all the dressing first, then remove the center of the dressing that covers the wound. It almost never hurts. Get rid of it safely. Wash your hands. Rinse the wound with normal saline or water, apply more benzoin to the outer edges of the skin (not to the wound), allow the air to dry and can apply a new dressing. Should I apply Bacitracin, Neosporine or other antibacterial ointment to the wound? With non-adhesive pads or Telfa, yes, . With Tegaderm I usually do not use antibacterial ointment. Sometimes with a bad wound that is deep, I will apply the smallest point of ointment to prevent the infection. But usually makes the Tegaderm dressing fall quickly, so the amount has to be very small, about the size of 1-2 sesame seeds. Skin Tac or Benzoin helps the dress stay on. If it falls, put the next one without an antibacterial ointment because part of the ointment will have remained in the wound and that's enough. The Tegaderm maintains dirt, acts as a layer of skin and allows the body to naturally heal, so the body's immune cells will fight the infection. Some people are sensitive to benzoin, so if we notice redness where you put benzoin, see if it gets better if you stop using it. Some people also have Tegaderm sensitivity.
